The palette shows 2-levels hieararchy (root, categories, and items in
categories). It would be nice to visualize a tree hierarchy of items inside each
category.

"Consider", "would be nice" ... doesn't sound like a DEFECT to me. For NB 5.0,
we made a concious decision to visualize the common component palette as 2-level
only. This decision can be revisited in future releases.
