Description rmunn 2010-02-21 00:16:02 UTC
A bug was reported at
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/openoffice.org/+bug/523893 stating
that the Spanish translation for "character" in many places was "carácter",
which should instead be "caracter" with no accent.

I have created a patch against
http://svn.services.openoffice.org/ooo/trunk/l10n/source/es/localize.sdf to fix
this issue.

Please note that I am not a native Spanish speaker myself; I am just passing on
the bug report and attaching a patch that will hopefully help fix it quickly.

Changing issue type to PATCH now that a patch is available.
Comment 3 rgb 2010-06-03 08:28:30 UTC
I'm a native Spanish speaker and carácter is right. See the definition of the
«Real academia española»:
http://buscon.rae.es/draeI/SrvltGUIBusUsual?TIPO_HTML=2&LEMA=carácter&FORMATO=am
According to the rae dictionary, "caracter" (without accent) is not a Spanish
word, so please, do NOT apply this patch.

I'm adding this comment to all open issues with Issue Type == PATCH. We have 220 such issues, many of them quite old. I apologize for that.

We need your help in prioritizing which patches should be integrated into our next release, Apache OpenOffice 4.0.

If you have submitted a patch and think it is applicable for AOO 4.0, please respond with a comment to let us know.

On the other hand, if the patch is no longer relevant, please let us know that as well.

If you have any general questions or want to discuss this further, please send a note to our dev mailing list: dev@openoffice.apache.org

Thanks!

As indicated on comment 3, the right spelling is "carácter", with the diacritic on top of the second a, so I'm closing this as "not a bug".

NOTE: the Real Academia Española dictionary changed its urls. See here:

http://lema.rae.es/drae/?val=caracter

There you can read that "The word caracter is not registered on the dictionary" (La palabra caracter no está registrada en el Diccionario) and that "carácter" is suggested instead.
