Description Unknown 2003-11-23 14:33:34 UTC
AutoCorrect should automatically capitalize "I," "I'm," "I'd," etc. This
should be a default as it is in MSOff rather than users having to manually
enter each of these as a new AutoCorrect item.

As of OOo3 beta, i is correctly capitalised, but the other examples, i'm and i'd
are not (at least in UK and US English).
I agree this should be included. Additionally, proper apostrophes should be used.
Confirmed.

As of OO v3.4.1 the issue has been tested on Windows 7 64-bit and the outcome confirmed. "i" is properly converted to "I" when placed as a solitary letter, however as previously stated "i'm", "i'd" and "i've" are not being capitalized when written under the same conditions.

Thanks,

I was able to replicate the bug using Mac OS X 10.8.2 and Open Office 3.4.1 Build 9593 Rev. 1372282.

Here were the steps I used to replicate the bug:
1) Start Open Office
2) Create a new document
3) Type in the following stream of characters "I've i've i've i'd i'd"
4) Observe the fact that all the contractions after the first one have not been auto capitalized.
5) Press Enter and create a new line
6) Repeat steps 3 and 4
7) Observe that auto capitalization for contraction involving the letter "i" does not occur after the beginning of the sentence.

I also used steps 1-7 in Microsoft Word, and Microsoft Word DID auto capitalize the "I"

Based on the frequency of the "i've" and "i'd" contractions in regular English speech, and the consistency with comparable products heuristic, I would classify this bug as a P3 bug.

I successfully replicated the above mentioned bug on a windows 7 PC
and following are the steps:

1)Open a new open office
Click on new text document.
3)Now if we start typing i'am, i've, i'd it the OO doesn't auto correct these words.
3)only the first letter of the word is capitalized.
5)Letters after the contractions aren't capitalized.

These same steps were followed in ms word and it works! Due to the importance of the these words in any document this bug has to be fixed.

There were mistakes in my previous comment so i would like to post it again with some changes.

I successfully replicated the above mentioned bug on a windows 7 PC
and following are the steps:

1)Open a new open office
2)Click on new text document.
3)Now if we start typing i'am, I've, i'd in the Open office it doesn't auto correct these words.
3)only the first letter of the word starting with I is capitalized. And also if i'm or i've is written in the starting of the document or anywhere else in the document after a full stop it works.
5)Letters after the contractions aren't capitalized in other portions of the document.
These same steps were followed in ms word and it works! Due to the importance of the these words in any document this bug needs to be fixed.

I have successfully replicated this bug in OpenOffice 4.0.1 running on Linux Ubuntu 13.04 version.
Follow simple steps shown below to replicate this bug
1. Create a new document in OpenOffice Writer.
2. Type some text that contains i've or i'm such that one of them should appear at the beginning of a sentence and the other one in the middle of the sentence.
3. Notice that the letter 'i' (in the words i've or i'm) gets auto capitalized only if it is used in the beginning of a sentence and not in the middle of a sentence.
4. Also notice that if the letter 'i' is used alone it gets auto capitalized everywhere regardless its position in the sentence.

I have done some follow-up tests to see how the letter 'i' in the contraction words behave if it was placed after a comma or semicolon or as a starting letter in the quotes. The OpenOffice writer failed to auto capitalize even in those situations. This made clear that the letter 'i' in the contraction words is getting capitalized only after fullstops i.e at the beginning of a new sentence and at the beginning of a document. Even though this failure is not completely a bug, I would consider the auto capitalization enhancement for the contraction words to be very important because those are commonly used in English. So this feature should be provided by OpenOffice writer which is already implemented in MS word.

Bug was replicated using Mac OS X version 10.9 and Open Office 4.0.1 Build 9714.

The steps necessary to replicate the bug are as follow:
1) Launch OpenOffice
2) In the splash screen, choose Text Document
3) When the text document editing screen appear type "Jim and i, he is cool im more relax, however id be cool with that." as is.
4) Hit enter
5) Note how I was changed while im was not changed to I'm

I think it will be nice to confirm and fix the bug since these words are constantly used by many users.

Thanks,

Jose Miranda
