Apache OpenOffice (AOO) Bugzilla – Issue 23021
Border line in document header not shown in PDF export
Last modified: 2013-08-07 14:41:36 UTC
The line beneath the header in the attached Word document is not present on a printout. The line is also invisible on a PDF created with the built-in PDF converter. The problem is visible in OOo 1.1.0 and 680m13.

WFM with 1.1.0 German version WIN98SE: 645m19(Build8693) I can confirm that I do not see the border in the attached PDF. This is not a "Horizontal Line", but a "Border" problem, so I change subject. Reporter, can you reproduce those problems with other borders? Can you add more information how the attached document has been created? Rainer
The .DOC file was created with MS Word. It was part of a large document that I stripped down to this one page (last saved with Word 2000 SR-1). The PDF was created with PDF995 (a free PDF generator for Win32 - www.pdf995.com). Did some more tests with the first attached file (Conversion12.doc): PDF with PDF995 from OOo 1.1.0: no horizontal line in the PDF document PDF with PDF writer from OOo 1.1.0: no horizontal line in the PDF document PDF with PDF995 from OOo 680m13: horizontal line in the PDF document -> no problem PDF with PDF writer from OOo 680m13: no horizontal line in the PDF document I don't have a printer available to test the results with a real printer driver. I managed to create a border line in Word that is not visible on screen in OOo, it's not on the PDF output either. See new attached ZIP (Conversion12b.zip) Conversion12b.zip contains: “Conversion12b.doc”: Word 2000 document with borders around the top and bottom headers + line trough the top header. “Conversion12b Word.PDF”: PDF995 output from MS Word. “Conversion12b OOo 1.1.0.PDF”: PDF995 output from OOo 1.1.0.

Hi pietervsta, those are funny things. For your "main problem" I will try other testers who can confirm it (I can not), but I am afraid that it is something very special with your system. The second effect "Missing 'middle-border' in the page header" is something completely different: You have 2 paragraphs in the document: 1. from "E.D.&A." to "18 19" 2. from "E-mail" to "EDnA.be" Each of those 2 paragraphs has has a border complete around, and it seems, that WORD and OOo have different interpretation for that situation (all comments concerning visibility in the OOo document): - Word: shows a complete border around each of the paragraphs - OOo: merges the borders (if they have the same format) of the paragraphs to one border around the complete 2 paragraphs. If aou change the colour of the border around paragraph from "E-mail" to "EDnA.be" you will see that the dividing line between the paragraphs becomes visible. This is not only in the headline, but anywhere in the document. Both methods of WORD and OOo have specific advantages and disadvantages, but to prevent from compatibility problems, OOo should be able to simulate the "WORD- way". I am not sure: is there any possibility to select the behaviour?) All this has nothing to do with your first problem and should be handled in a separate issue. Pietervsta, will you bbe so kind to check, whether this is already known and if not, to open a second issue with your example file "Conversion12b" and some comments like these here? May be, some information concerning your graphic card and your printer configuration (especially: printer driver) might be helpful. Does the problem remain if you try another printer driver? Rainer
Now I was able to reproduce the problem. It seems to be a PDF export problem and not a print problem; reporter, you never tried a real printout, only PDF- export? I tried with "Conversion12.doc", opened in 1.1.0 German version WIN98SE: 645m19(Build8693). PDF in all qualities "low", "medium", "good" never showed the border line at the bottom of the page header. After i changed border line from "0.05pt" to "1.0 pt", it was visible even in low quality export. After I changed back to "0.05pt" again not visible in any quality for export. This problem did not appear for PDF creation with GSviw/GS. This problem seems to appear only for the border line in the header: I marked the last line in the header and copied it to the document body, there the border line is visible in the PDF export without problem. Reasons: This problem only appears as long as you work with the "original imported border line: thick one will be shown, thin one not. If you change border to "none" for the page header and then set a new bottom border line in the OOo document, the export problem has vanished. I made some further tests with WORD2000 and the testfile "Conversion12.doc". The problem with the border line in the header is reproducible. If I delete and recreate it in WORD, the problem remains in the OOo PDF export. I never had problems with border lines in the document body. There only is a problem for the bottom border line in the header. When I created a border as a complete frame around the header (in WORD), I saw no problem in the OOo PDF export. Even I am not really sure whether this is a missing functionality, I set the "ms_interoperability" keyword. This problem seems to appear only for the border line in the header: I marked the last line in the header and copied it to the document body, there the border line is visible in the PDF export without problem.
Reassigned to owner of subcomponent. Rainer
.
cp->pl: please check if we have a problem with too thin lines
The missing lines (well, rather thin rectangles) do not even get drawn during PDF generation. I guess that makes it a writer problem. Sometimes as reported they do not get drawn even on the display. AMA: please also have a look at the other problem that writer seems to make one border out of two if their thickness is equal; i, too, suspect that is a bug.
< ... suspect that is a bug Hi Philipp, for some applications it is a bug, for other ones, and most of mine, it is an important and useful feature, especially when I paste "unformatted text" with many paragraphs into an area with border complete around. There I _want_ that OOo connects all borders to one big border around teh complete new text. It would be fine if we could get something like a preference selection checkbox "connect ....", but actually I have no dea ho to handle that in a user- friendly way. And we should discuss that in the new issue 23118, which has been opened, because thes problem has nothing to do with the problem in the original report. Thank you Rainer
Another PDF 0.5pt - problem: issue 18262. Anyone able to check relations between this issue and issue 18262 (it's only a _very_ vague suspect!)? Rainer
Hi rainer, pieter, I checked this with OpenOffice 1.1 and with a src680m26 and scr680m33. I was able to reproduce it with OOo 1.1, but it seems to be fixed in src680m26 and src680m33. Could you please recheck this issue?
Tested this with Writer 1.9.65. The PDF output of conversion12.doc looks fine.
