Apache OpenOffice (AOO) Bugzilla – Issue 35959
Incomplete context in help about Shift+Ctrl+S
Last modified: 2013-08-07 14:41:36 UTC
The keyboard shortut Shift+Ctrl+S as mentioned in the help files for inserting special characters or symbols doesn't work. Swedish version of OOo 1.1.3. The workaround for now is to activate it manually through Tools > Adapt... > Keyboard, then selecting Category (Insert), Function (Insert Special Character), then Keystroke Combination (press Shift+Ctrl+S) and click [Change].
Reassigned to ES.
ES->FL: I don't know what to do with that.. Ok, if the Help says (amny times) the shortcut exists I don't think the Docu invented this. So it should be a bug On the other hand, the shortcut is free in every modules. So we may specify it apwide. And it would be a real Blooper for you ;)
.
FL->UFI: The help section for "Special Character" in the SO 7 online help describes the Shift+Ctrl+S shortcut. We did not use this shortcut in SO 7 and SO 8. So please remove this hint in the online help. We will think about new keyboard shortcuts for SO 9 again. Text taken from help: "Inserts special characters from the installed fonts. You can also access this command by pressing Shift+Ctrl+S."
This is a feature that got broken from SO7 to SO8. Do not cite the help out of context. It is about text edit boxes only. For example, the text boxes in the Find&Replace dialog. Press Shift+Ctrl+S there to insert a special character. It is a bug if SO8 does not allow this. Don't think this bug can be fixed by changing the help text.
OK, yes, now I see in file text\shared\01\04100000.xhp the text promises too much. Shift+Ctrl+S did never work in a normal document, only in text boxes. Will change that help text. But still the shortcut should work in SO8 text boxes, shouldn't it?
Yes it's broken. There is already a task for this: issue 33483. But the help is incomplete (missing to explain the context) when it says for the Special Character dialog "Inserts special characters from the installed fonts. You can also access this command by pressing Shift+ Ctrl +S.". You can only access this, as you said, in text input fields. The help speaks about the context on the page "Inserting Special Characters" but not on the page "Special Characters". Please add the context also on this page, thanx!

As far as I've understood, this isse has now been "fixed" by changing the help text to reflect what's already there. To have "please make it work the way it was originally described" made into a request for enhancement (as I thought the issue type implicated), what do I have to do? Just reopen it, or post a whole new thing about it?
You learned about the shortcut Shift+Ctrl+S to invoke the Special Character dialog from the online help. However, the online help failed to tell you that this keyboard shortcut only was intended to work in text boxes. It was never designed to work inside a document. We changed the online help, so this bug is fixed and closed now. If you want the same keyboard shortcut to work not only in text boxes, but inside any document, it would be a good idea to post this as a new enhancement request. The new request would make it clear that nothing got fixed, no other bugs depend on it, would start new, so please submit a new request with a new title.
