Description bigserpent 2002-03-27 16:12:53 UTC
The most common used direction at vertical text orientation is from left to
right. An example is a label of vertical dimentional line. Such text orientation
is absent.
Comment 1 Joost Andrae 2002-03-29 14:41:50 UTC
Joost->Falco: reassigned as RFE.
Comment 2 falko.tesch 2003-09-30 14:58:14 UTC
Well, this text direction is only used (AFAIK) by Mongolians!
Therefore we do not have it.

Nevertheless it makes sense to have such text direction:
Implement text direction: "Vertical, left-to-right"

meanwhile, there's a reasonable work around: select text and set properties to
turn 90 degr.

text rotated in cell by using character properties
Comment 10 chkur 2007-05-31 17:30:26 UTC
Using of character properties works incorrect:

1. I can't save rotated text in .doc file - text becomes horizontal.
2. I can't format rotated text with Enter, only Shift+Enter. If I use Enter, I
get unreadable text.
3. I can't use standard character style "Vertical direction of symbols"(maybe I
not exact translated name of character style from Russian) cause multiline text
becomes unreadable singleline text in Microsoft Word. In single-line text in
this file when open with MSWord we can see squares at the end of line.
This Issue has 2 duplicates - 21089 and 25140, issue 25140 has 13 duplicates -
and this bugs are described there.

So, in OOo I can't normally use rotated text?
Comment 11 mhatheoo 2007-07-06 13:15:11 UTC
question please:

I see nonsens in closing issues related to vertical text aswell as the still
existing missbehavior in OO.o 2.2.1

so: What is the expected solution for this issue?

Martin

(btw:
this is standard and a must-have - by that it is not an enhancement but just a
defect)
Comment 12 equus 2007-08-20 15:03:13 UTC
How come that such an important and really basic issue has been handled for 5
years now?
Comment 13 bettina.haberer 2007-09-26 16:00:58 UTC
Hi Mathias, I have changed the current owner to your owner. Please take the
ownership of these enhancements.

Comment 15 chkur 2008-03-11 09:07:36 UTC
Is it possible to fix this issue in 3.0?
Comment 16 neiljansons 2008-03-11 09:33:41 UTC
My experience of the inability to save rotated text is that it is only when
saving as a word document (it returns to horizontal). When saving as an OO
writer file it saves correctly.
My problem is that I need this to work properly so that doc files can be
exchanged among people most of whom are using MS word (and it is unreasonable of
me to expect them to install additional software just because the software I use
has a problem).
Comment 17 mhatheoo 2008-03-22 23:08:14 UTC
@neil

it is a generic problem of OO.o
if you see a second problem with save/reopen files in MSO-format, you may open a
new issue

It need to save sell space ans use vertical-text place. To save the sheet space
need regroop cells and rotate text on 90 deg in the some table header cells.

Comment 19 zodavaan 2008-03-26 06:19:22 UTC
This issue related to vertical texts in table cell is celebrating 6th year
anniversary. Please give some attention to this issue. This is very basic
feature to expect from any word processor.
Insert a table in OOo 2.4 Writer.
Copy in a table cell following.
Aaaa
Bbbb
Cccc
Dddd
Then select all 4 lines. Now Format -- Character... -- Position tab then select
90-degrees. See the result. Vertical text doesn't wrap also shows up as
DdddCcccBbbbAaaa. At least should be AaaaBbbbCcccDddd.
Comment 20 frank.meies 2008-03-27 08:27:23 UTC
fme->zodavaan: Please note that the character rotation you are referring to is
not intended to be a replacement for a layout rotation. This issue is about
implementing a 90° rotated layout in table cells. However, the character
rotation can be used as a workaround in case you have only one paragraph
containing not too much text in your table cell.
Comment 21 bigserpent 2008-03-27 09:08:31 UTC
The fact is that workaround of 90 degrees rotation doesn't work at all with text
containing several paragraphs and it isn't converted to the same rotated text if
the document is saved as MS Word 97 and vice versa.
Comment 22 zodavaan 2008-03-28 02:43:09 UTC
I don't differentiate between a work around and a layout rotation. As long as I
can rotate text in table cell by 90° and save the file in odf and doc format and
open them later to see things as I intended to look. In Word 2003, text is
rotated by Format... -Text Direction... and you choose rotation.
It might be issue with odf to doc conversion. But in OpenOffice unless you
press shift+enter for multiple paragraph it doesn't wrap properly so it might be
a DEFECT in OpenOffice itself. I think this issue should be P2 priority. And
marked as Defect not an enhancement. It's a must have feature for any word
processor and not many people will be willing wait for 6 years.
Top to bottom and left to right text layout for Mongolian script is an optional
enhancement although I would like that feature very much as I'm a Mongolian and
willing to wait for 6 years. As far as I know only Word 2007 and LATEX have
that layout capability.

Comment 23 chkur 2008-06-24 21:38:33 UTC
This issue was created 6 years ago. It has 50 votes. Is it not enough? Please
don't write about character rotation and Shift+Enter as a workaround - it looks
ugly. I don't know who uses direction "Right-to-left(vertical)" in tables - it
works great in OOo. But we always use "Vertical, left-to-right" in Russia and
Ukraine, which will not be implemented even in OOo3.0.
Comment 24 canis 2008-08-21 11:39:23 UTC
53 votes already :)
What about fixing it? Very usefull feature I think.
Comment 25 kpalagin 2008-09-06 19:34:10 UTC
Mathias,
please consider 3.x target for this 6.5 year old issue, which has 54 votes.
Regards,
Kirill Palagin.
Comment 26 Mathias_Bauer 2008-09-08 14:33:03 UTC
The age of an issue can't be a reason to work on it, the effort to implement it
and the assumed benefit (for the users and how many of them, the project itself
etc.) also must be taken into account.

We are currently working with a mongolian developer to get the mongolian script
support into OOo. We got a huge patch for that and reviewing and improving this
patch will bind all resources in this area at the moment.

oops, that sounds funny
just to make you remember the main-item:
turning text in cells 90-degr. anti-clockwise
is not working.
Yes - other artworks and possible solutions with
vertical text are wanted and do not work too.
But for the beginning (6 years!) ordinary vertical
text would be a good to have.

Is this issue depends on issue 91226 which target is 3.1? It will be available
for non-mongolian languages? I'm waiting for solving it very long time...
Comment 29 Mathias_Bauer 2008-11-05 09:49:40 UTC
No, this issue does not really depend on issue 91226. But both features touch
code in a lot of common areas. Working on both issues at a time is bad for
resource as well as for work organisation reaons.
Comment 30 Badral 2008-11-25 01:43:24 UTC
The patch for issue 91226 doesn't cover it.
2mba: Who is working on this issue? How is current status? I am ready to work
together on this issue.
thanks,
Badaa
Comment 31 Mathias_Bauer 2008-11-25 08:49:27 UTC
Currently nobody is working on that issue. It has target "3.x", so the plan is
to implement it in the next 1-2 years. From what I can forsee today we haven't
planned to implement it in the next 3-6 months, but we will support you if you
want to do it. The best way to coordinate the work, exchange information and
getting assistance is to use the dev@sw.openoffice.org mailing list. There you
will have a larger number of people listening and you will get faster responses.
What do you think?

Comment 33 Badral 2008-11-25 09:42:48 UTC

Thanks for infos!

What about this issue?
Comment 35 catalania 2009-12-08 19:05:36 UTC
Really NOT "implement 90 deg text rotation in table cells", better: Write in any
direction (angle) - especially in tables.

See this pic:

Comment 36 ml-saunders 2013-09-05 15:28:34 UTC
Its now 2013 guys and girls :( Really ?

This is a requirement and not a luxury and I will explain why.
I have to submit a document online for publishing. That document requires tables. Those tables must have the top of text facing the binding. On the left page right to left vertical is required. On the right page left to right vertical is required. Many of my tables have to be on the right page.

Vis a vis.... what use is a word processor if it cant be used for proper publishing ?

Vertical table orientation of 90 and 270 degrees is essential.
Can we please have this added after requesting it for so many years.
Either a specific table rotation option or by some other means that actually is designed to do the job and not a bodge that don't really work.

Thanks.
