Description Unknown 2002-05-05 13:14:00 UTC
After the installation of OpenOffice the formula editor works without problems.
Mathematical operational signs and expressions are spent correctly after the
input. But if I shut down the PC and restart the operating system (W2k) and
will work again with the forumla editor, then errors arise during the
representation of mathematical operators. Thus for example during the input
of "1 + 1 = 2" the indications are represented "+" and "=" as small boxes.
Sometimes also a clock symbol is spent in place of the correct mathematical
indication.

I had this problem with both Windows 2000 and Windows XP. When you
first install OpenOffice the formula editor works fine, but after a
reboot it cannot find the font and all the function characters turn
to small boxes. The OpenMath.TTF font doesn't even appear in the
Windows\Fonts folder, though a command prompt 'dir' lists it as
present in that directory.
I managed to fix the problem in Windows 2000 by using the TweakUI
utility and the 'Repair Fonts Folder' utility. It didn't work in XP
however. (This fix is listed by sun as a solution to the same
problem with StarMath.TTF when using StarOffice 5.2). I tried
assorted other things to no effect.

Regarding the comment of R. Scullion:
I don't believe the presence (or not) of a font called "OpenMath.ttf"
is responsible for the formula editor working properly or not because:
1.)
If I reinstall OOo 1.0 (or 641) the formula editor works fine (until
reboot), although there is no file named "OpenMath.ttf" to be found
and no font of this name installed.
2.)
I have StarOffice 6.0 Preview installed in parellel. If the formula
editor works correctly in OpenOffice, it also does in StarOffice 6.0,
if it doesn't in OOo, it also won't in StarOffice.

I havn't found a solution yet either.

The font doesn't appear when you view the font folder in windows -
that shows you only the installed fonts. You have to drop down to
the command prompt to see the TTF file.
Anyways - I know what's wrong. I had a look through the registry and
the font is installed as Opens___.fot instead of Opens___.ttf. I
removed this key from the registry and moved the Opens___.ttf file
from the fonts folder to another folder using the command prompt. I
then opened the fonts folder and used file>install new font to
select the opens___.ttf and installed it properly. It is now entered
correctly in the registry as opens___.ttf and everything works fine.
It also now shows up in the fonts folder in windows.
i.e. the fault is with the extension in the registry key that the
installer adds.

Thanks for this very interesting observation.

Will this be documented somewhere so that the people who already have
installed OOo on a Windows System can fix that. In may case (Windows
NT 4.0 SP5) I only had to delete the OpenOffice Symbol font from the
font folder and install it again (no fiddling in the Registry was
necessary).

Could some one make a patch for us who have encountered this issue,
but are as technically advanced?

Here a description on how to fix the problem when you have OOo already
installed:
* Open your fonts folder (should be C:\WINNT\Fonts or C:\WINDOWS\Fonts)
* _Copy_ the file 'opens___.ttf' to a save location
* Open the Control Panel -> Fonts
* Highlight the font 'OpenSymbol' and hit the delete button
* Open File -> Install new font
* Change to the location where you stored 'opens___.ttf'
* Mark the font and hit OK

The 'work around' / solution described by Ansgar Schrage (2002-05-27
01:25 PDT) indeed works for me also on my Windows XP machine and thus
the (dulpicate) issue reported by me regarding the limited choice of
bullets (issue # 5434) is resolved so to speak.

May I suggest that this 'work around' be posted somewhere more visible
like in an FAQ ?

Also I had hoped that this would also have directly resolved the other
issue I reported regarding the limited choice of font selection (issue
# 1562). This however is not the case. So there is no direct link
between these as I personally suspected ? Any idea's ?

Comment 34 Unknown 2002-08-01 02:47:52 UTC
The fix mentioned in this issue (4516) works as solution for the
font error in OO 1.0.

However, in 1.01 I encounter the same problem that was experienced
in 1.0, but the solution does not work in this case.

I uninstalled 1.01 and resintalled 1.0 and everything was working
again.

I can't figure out why the fix works in 1.0 and doesn't work in
1.01, which isn't a major release.

Can somebody get back with me on this issue, as I'm interested in
seeing where the source of this problem is?

Thanks,

Max Annen
