Apache OpenOffice (AOO) Bugzilla – Issue 5743
Change auto capitalization description and default status
Last modified: 2003-12-22 05:26:25 UTC
Steps to reproduce: 1-create new spreadsheet 2-Type XXXX on a cell 3-Move to the cell below that and try to enter xxxx 4-Move to another field As soon as you enter the first x in the second field the autocomplete wants to enter xXXX, you keep typing lower x's until you seem to have xxxx but when you exit the field the program writes XXXX. The only way I figure to have xxxx on that field is to write it somewhere else (in another column) and copy-paste it. Please don't tell me this is a feature and not a bug :-)
I just found this in the manual: "AutoInput is case-sensitive. If, for example, you have written "Total" in one cell of a column, you cannot enter "total" in the another cell of that column without first deactivating AutoInput." So is it really a feature or just a nicely documented bug? Wouldn't it be case-insensitive then? Is there some reason for this unexpected behaviour?
I'll have a look, Pete
@Alonso: Hi, two workarounds. 1. Turn of autoinput. 2. Type 'xxxx instaead of xxxx. @Falko: AFAIK this is the specified behaviour. Short comment would be helpful. Peter

This is surely a bug - and the note is surely misleading in calling it "case-sensitive". It should be possible to use AutoInput and have it preserve the case that the user has actually typed in. The present behaviour I think it would be more accurate to call "case-insensitive". It's completely "insensitive" to what case the user types in!
This behavior still exists in 1.1RC. I am changing this from a feature to a defect, because it should allow lower case input. Added the oooqa keyword. I also adjusted the target milestone to 1.1.1, in hopes that the developers would see it as a bug as well, and attempt to corrected it before the 1.1 stable release.
I searched for a specific issue concerning Autocapitalizing in calc and didn't find one. If this issue is incorrect, please advise and I'll start a new one. The ability to defeat Autocapitalizing torment (it's not a feature IMO) is already contained in Tools | Autocorrect | Options as "Capitalize first letter of every sentence." In order to clarify this option, change it to read "Capitalize first letter in every sentence / cell." Then, make the default setting for this option "OFF." Let those who enjoy self-flagellation turn it on. -- Doug
In 1.1RC, deactivate "Capitalize first letter of every sentence" under Tools->AutoFormat/AutoCorrect->Options and OOo happily keeps text entered into cells in lowercase. This info was shared on the users list by Tim Habermann, and it works. But...still, if you type Apple in the first cell, and fully type apple in the cell below it, it changes itself to Apple when enter is pressed. This can be addressed by going to Tools->Cell Contents, and toggle AutoInput off by clicking on it to remove the check mark. These choices also exist in 1.0.2, and it works there too. I agree that the adding cell to the description of the selection would help make this more clear, and that it would be better to deselect this capitalization feature by default. I am changing the summary from "Autoinput ignores capitalization in Calc" to "Change auto capitalization description and default status."
I've not had any "mission-critical" uses that required this feature, but it is truly annoying that Calc forces capital letters.
I am wondering if two issues (or maybe three) are combined here. Maybe Issues 5021 and 7293 should not have been marked as duplicates of this issue. If this turns out to be the case, please advise, and I will attempt to separate the issues to better individualize the features mentioned here.
Issues 5743, 5021, and 7293 are all in the meta-issue of Autocorrection. The three options (replacement table, INitial caps, and First letter) all appear to work per design (1.1rc2, W98), at least individually, although I admit to less than exhaustive checking and I haven't read the design spec. Further, it appears that once turned off, these behaviors remain off, but that brings up another issue. Whatever Autocorrection settings are entered for one sheet become the default settings for all sheets/documents whether previously created or new. It seems that the settings should be saved per document and the defaults used only on new documents. Perhaps a "Save as Default" function is needed? I didn't find this issue posted and it seems worth opening.
Sorry for late comment on this: Peter is completely right. Autocompletion _is_ case sensitive and that's the way it is defined. So there is no bug or whatsoever, :o) Please close this one. Thx. (BTW, if you consider this behaviour no good, please file a new(!) ENHANCEMENT issue on this) Regards Falko
