Writer requires that for merging tables, there should not be anything between them.

But often there is white space (spaces, tabs, page break, section break, etc)
between such tables. Although this is not visible, it prevents the merging of
the tables.

Let the user highlight parts of both tables and merge them. The white space
should be removed automatically.

OpenOffice Automailer seems to have a problem. It sent me a Mail about issue
60619 having the same content as issue 60618 ...

Oops! 

They ARE almost the same: Actually after I entered the bug, the site appeared to
hand (as before)  and I had to post the bug again. Please invalidate the other one.

The site is too slow and often does not respond after I enter all details. :(
