Description Unknown 2002-06-23 02:42:11 UTC
I've been opening up MS Office documents under OO 1.0 and several of the symbols
in the document display incorrectly.

At first, when I installed OO these .doc files all displayed correctly, but
after several hours or days the files won't display the right characters. This
also happened with builds 641 and 642. I've tried this on two systems, an XP and
a 95 machine, both experience the same issue.

Everything else works great, just these documents are giving me a problem. One
of the files that I am having trouble with is listed above.

Thanks,

Max Annen

Thanks for posting Max.

I'm having trouble getting to the URL you provided.

Could you please attach the document to this issue by clicking on the "Create a new attachment" link inside this issue 6066.

Screenshots showing the problem would be fantastic.

Thanks.

Hopefully this will help you out more with this issue.

I also experienced the same problem on a Windows 95 machine with OO
1.0. I've been unable to find the cause for this problem, so maybe
you will have more of an idea about this problem than me.

Let me know if there is anything else you need.

Thanks,

Max Annen

That looks like a symbol font error, perhaps that is issue 4516. Try
the workaround there.
Comment 6 prgmgr 2002-07-21 15:54:29 UTC
Unable to duplicate with Win NT 4.0, OO 1.0.1.

I also noticed that the positioning of boxes has improved over OO 1.0.
Comment 7 Unknown 2002-08-01 02:42:07 UTC
The fix mentioned in issue 4516 works as solution for the font error
in OO 1.0.

However, in 1.01 I encounter the same problem that was experienced
in 1.0, but the solution does not work in this case.

I uninstalled 1.01 and resintalled 1.0 and everything was working
again.

I can't figure out why the fix works in 1.0 and doesn't work in
1.01, which isn't a major release.

Can somebody get back with me on this issue, as I'm interested in
seeing where the source of this problem is?

Thanks,

Max Annen

Weirdness. I have the same problem now, but I don't know how I
duplicated it. I noticed that I posted previously that it worked on
my install of OO 1.0.1.

My test box is messy so I'll need to reinstall the OS before I can
run a clean check. Right now I have OO ( 1.0.1, 1.0, 638 ) and
StarOffice ( 5.2 and 6 beta ) installed.

I did manage to work around the problem:

1. Open up the document in OO 1.0.
2. Save the document as OO 1.0 text document format.
3. Open up the document in OO 1.0.1.

PM->CM: Any suggestions or stuff you wanted me to try out?

P M:

There is really nothing else that I need to report about this issue.

What is so strange is that I can fix the font error in OO 1.0, but
in 1.01 (just a few bug fixes) this problem so far has no work
around (as far as a quick fix is concerned).

If you could reply back with more information when you reinstall
your OS and everything else, I would very much appreciate it.

Thanks,

Max Annen

I've included a screenshot of how the document looks in OO 1.0.1.

Duplicated on Win NT 4.0 SP6a, OO 1.0.1. This was replicated on a
fresh install of NT and OO 1.0.1.

I've tried reinstalling the OpenSymbol TTF font. That does not
resolve the issue.

Will this problem (Bug Issue 6066) be fixed before the next minor
release of OO?

Also, I have submitted two other bug issues in the meantime. They are
bug issue 7028 and bug issue 6685.

Bug issue 7028 is an issue with printing in landscape mode in OO 1.01
and bug issue 6685 is a clipboard issue with the copy/paste commands,
also in OO 1.01.

If you could look into this other bug issues, I'd really appreciate it.

I know you're probably very busy, but I want to make sure that
somebody is aware of these bug issues.

Thanks,

Max Annen

Max, make sure you have the following option enabled:

Tools->Load/Save->Microsoft Office

Under the [L] ( load ) column, make sure "MathType to OpenOffice.org
Math / OpenOffice.org Math to MathType" is enabled.

P M:

Displaying math equations symbols is still a problem in OO 1.01.

I also made those changes to "MathType to OpenOffice.org
Math / OpenOffice.org Math to MathType" is enabled. OO was still not
displaying any symbols at all, again.

I guess we will just have to wait for the next minor release of OO
to get this bug fixed. Do you know when that will be?

Thanks,

Max Annen

P M:

For bug issue 7028, have you heard of any other instances of this
issue in other bug reports?

This landscape printing problem is noticable in OO 1.01.

I would just like to see if there are any other people experiencing
this same issue as I am.

Also, do you know when the next minor of OO will be?

Thanks,

Max Annen

On Win NT 4.0 SP6a, OOo 643:

With MathType conversion off:

A lot of missing symbols when OOo imports the document. However,
there is no "blank rectangle" syndrome.

With MathType conversion on:

I see the "blank rectangle" where there should be a "w" math symbol
with a line directly on top of the "w". You can see this on the very
first page in the first equation.

On the last page, the "w" math symbol that is "closed" ( really
sorry, I suck at math symbol names ) does not import. You can see
this on the last page 2 equation from the bottom.

PM,

I can view any documents with math symbols in OO Build 643, just
fine. However, I'm still experiencing issues with the problems
contained in bug issues, 7028 and 6685 (even in OO Build 643). Bug
issue 7028 is the print landscape problem and bug issue 6685 is the
issue where the copy/paste command leaves yellow boxes along with
the selected text in the document window.

Also, when I copy and paste a schematic from OrCAD Capture Lite (an
engineering software that allows you to simulate real circuits and
obtain theoretical values from a circuit, without build it) OO Build
643 won't paste anything from OrCAD, but it will from anything else.
This problem didn't occur in OO 1.01, either.

If you need more information on any of the bug issues that I have
mentioned, please contact me about them.

Thanks,

Max Annen
