Apache OpenOffice (AOO) Bugzilla – Issue 65953
Mailing lists were down and earlier mails sent are missing
Last modified: 2006-10-10 08:29:03 UTC
Hi, mailing lists seem to be down since 2006-05-30 22:00 UTC (2006-05-31 00:00 german time). I haven't received any mails from mailing lists since that time. There also was no reaction on trying a subscription. I checked german mailinglists and general mailinglists, too. Volker
Looking into the issue. Regards, Karthik Support Operationsh
CC-ing cloph as he filed an issue at exactly the time for this ;-)

Hi I just tried subscribing to a couple of mailing list like dev-help@collabtest.openoffice.org and got the subscription mail imm, could you also let us know the names of the mailing lists where the problem has been encountered. Regards, Karthik Support Operations
@support: Please try also to confirm your subscription. There are no mails at e.g. dev@de.openoffice.org, users@de.openoffice.org, dev@openoffice.org, users@openoffice.org Have a look at the archives through http://de.openoffice.org/servlets/ProjectMailingListList or http://www.openoffice.org/mail_list.html
Thanks for the info, could you confirm if you are able to recieve mails from lists. Karthik Support Operations
I have just sent a mail to dev@de.openoffice.org, CC karthiksp@openoffice.org with the subject "Mailinglisten down" Have a look at the archives. Volker
Thanks Volker, spoke to Stefan regarding the issue, will update you asap. Karthik Support Operations
Outbound CVS/IZ notifications work. But inbound messages are not relayed to <user>@openoffice.org neither are messages sent to mailing list subscribers.
Got first new mailinglist-mail today from releases@openoffice.org. It has been sent 10 minutes ago. Will we see the mails which were sent to the lists since 22:00 UTC ? Volker
It seems that mails sent now make it to the lists again, but the mails sent earlier did not arrive yet.
We are trying to find out why.
The initial internal update tells me that a misconfiguration of the virus/spam filter caused this e-mail outage. While all mails internal to CEE and outgoing were operational, incoming e-mails were filtered out. At this point we are investigating why this happened and how we can make sure that this does not re- occur in the future. Just for clarification, there is _no_ equipment (or hardware) failure associated with this outage.

@Karthik: Could you give us a clear advise: Will the mails that have been sorted out be recovered and sent to the mailing lists later on? Or do we have to tell everybody on the lists to repost the mails not delivered? If the second case is true: Are you able to generate a mail to all the lists containing such an information or should we do that on our own? Thanks in advance Bernhard
Unfortunately the 2nd case is true. We are trying to work with the community managers to see what's the best way to reach out to the community. Please update if the community can be made aware of this through some other means.
If there is no chance for you as support to generate a mail that will be sent to all the lists telling that the mails have to be resent, I'd suggest to send a mail to project_leads@openoffice.org (I'm not a project lead, so the list name could be wrong) with a link to the issue and the proposed solution. Every project lead is subscribed to this list, so informations given there will be spread into every project. If the project leads forward your mail to their lists the issue will be solved with just a few steps. This could be done with every severe problem affecting the entire mailing lists system. Just a proposal - Community Manager and project leads are the ones to decide... Best regards Bernhard
I'll send a note to project_leads shortly. Thanks for the hint :-) best Louis
so far to "CN doesn't silently drop mail"... :-( If it rejects mail - fine. But then it should report so to the MDA. Silently dropping mail is bad practice, even when it is only meant to avoid spam.
Those were my closing comments in Issue 62001 ;-) While that is true if only considering CEE, that comment does not take into account the involvement of the virus/spam filters in place before the mail reaches CEE. As have already been told by the CN internal team, I now stand corrected on this notion (silent dropped mails). CN is looking into ways to make sure that such occurences are eliminated.
sent note to project_leads. Should this issue be closed? Louis
1.) Support should have a kind of warning system for mailinglist-failures (e.g. hoourly automatic mail to an unofficial list) 2.) It should be written down, that on the occurence of mail-failures the projectlead-list has to be notified immdiaetely. If these points are clear and ok for everybody, this issue can be closed. Volker
Good points. I will take these to the internal team.
Closing this case.
Could we go ahead and close this issue .
closing...
