Description norbert2 2006-07-20 22:15:42 UTC
- please open the attached PDF in Adobe Reader

- have a look at the bookmarks: There is a missing space between the numbering
and the headings.

(Table Of Contents (TOCs) also have a missing space between numbering and
heading. But this can be changed within the TOC-settings.)

But for the PDF bookmarks I can't find a similar option.

I'm not sure if a fix space or a user definable character as separator (which
could be a space by default) should be implemented.

But the current behavior (missing space) is unacceptable.

This really downgrades the otherwise great PDF export of SO/OOo.

(Found on SO8 Product Update 3 rev. 2)

It would be great to have this issue targeted to OOo 2.x.
Comment 5 Rainer Bielefeld 2006-07-21 06:25:14 UTC
@norbert2
Pls. specify your OS and Platform!

I checked with "2.0.2 German version WIN XP: [680m5(Build9011)]" and found:

There are (at least) 2 possibilities to get some space between heading-numbering
and heading text in the "Bullets and Numbering" dialogue

1. Card "Position"
Changes here will bi visible in the heading itself, but nowhere else, not in an
OOo table of contents and not in a ToC in a PDF document exported from OOo

2. Card "Options"
Blanks in "After" will always be visible:
- in the heading itself
- in OOo ToC
- Bookmarks of PDF export documents
So this can be a workaround for norbert2's problem.

It really can be discussed whether this behaviour is optimum, but I can's see a
real bug. I see no "Must" why all formatting information should be available for
functions created by the PDF viewer. So I changed issue type.

pl->fme: the string that appears there is created by the application; please
enter a space between enumeration and text. Possibly you have a duplicate, i
know that uf already had the same issue and wanted to write an issue to you.

Comment 9 Rainer Bielefeld 2006-07-21 10:17:10 UTC
Yes, a space in bookmark between enumeration and text would be a good solution
Comment 10 norbert2 2006-07-21 11:22:39 UTC
The solution

"2. Card "Options"
Blanks in "After" will always be visible:
- in the heading itself
- in OOo ToC
- Bookmarks of PDF export documents
So this can be a workaround for norbert2's problem."

solves my problems.

It sets a space in the PDF bookmarks AND in the TOC.

If I would have known about this function before, I would not have filed this issue.

I'm not sure if just inserting a space in the PDF bookmarks is nedded / a good
solution. The current options are more flexible, but a bit circumstantial to
find. That's why I have filed this issue because I thought it would be
impossible to enter a space in the PDF bookmarks.

This soultion would make it impossible to replace the space by another character!

So there is not really a bug.

But the current situation is not a good default, I think.

-----------------------------
I think about the following solution:

In the Card "Numbering" in the "Outline Numbering"-window there should be a
checkbox enabled by default. This checkbox enters a space after the numbering
that can be seen in the PDF bookmarks and in the TOC. But within the document
body this space should have not effect, there only the entered space should be
displayed (in the "Position"-card).

If the user unchecks the checkbox, a edit field enables where the user can enter
a character (or string). This character/string should affect all (PDF bookmarks,
TOC AND document body.)

So the user would have good defaults for PDF bookmarks and TOC while the space
in the document body is not affected.

I forgot to mention the Navigator. My solution would also add a space in the
Navigator by default, that is currently missing, too.

So I really think inserting a fix space only to PDF bookmarks is a bad solution
because my solution also solves the missing space problem in other points of
writer, too.
Comment 12 norbert2 2006-07-21 11:29:24 UTC
It would be really better to introduce such a solution that fixes the missing
space by default problem in all places:

- PDF bookmarks
- Table Of contents
- Navigator

Are the more places?

I have added a screenshot that shows the problem for the Table Of Contents and
the Navigator.

Could someone who has the permissions please adjust this issue's summary since
this problem has turned out to be not PDF-specific!?

Comment 20 frank.meies 2006-07-24 07:36:05 UTC
fme->norbert2: You are right, the spacing issue also applies to the navigator.
Both the navigator and the pdf export only ask for the heading string (before +
number + after + text). The "space to text" setting is not considered.
Since there is an easy workaround, I would suggest to change the target to "OOo
later". Any objections?
Comment 21 norbert2 2006-07-25 21:21:22 UTC
It's OK. But we must nor forget the table of contents. It's also affected.
Comment 22 norbert2 2006-07-25 21:22:01 UTC
The table of contents (TOC) should be added to the summary.
Comment 23 frank.meies 2006-07-26 07:15:52 UTC
Added TOC to summary.
Comment 24 ggs 2007-04-03 18:46:12 UTC
I assume that in most cases a space between the numbering and the title is
wanted. So couldn't this issue be trivially solved by modifying OpenOffice's
default behaviour when creating outline numbering and TOCs? (E.g. "After"
should be prefilled with a space character) At least it would be an excellent
intermediary solution without any compatibility issues.

Please consider this for 2.3 or even 2.2.x.
