Description ingenstans 2003-09-04 19:20:10 UTC
When the autocorrect feture is set to capitalise words at the start of a
sentence, this fails if the word has an apostrophe in it.

Steps to repeat.
Turn on autocorrection "Capitalise first letter of ever sentence"
Type this: "a sentence ends. it's very frustrating"
Expected behaviour: "a sentence ends. It's very frustrating"
Actual behaviour: "a sentence ends. it's very frustrating"

Note that the autocorrection works perfectly well if you type insted: "a
sentence ends. its most frustrating feature was ..."
That produces, as it should, "a sentence ends. Its most frustrating feature was"

I've placed this as P4 because it's only irritating. But it is irritating, and a
clear failure to work as it should.

Still broken on RC4 for me. I think the crusial factor is that I have
autocorrection set to replace single quotes with apostrophes. When I
do not, the capitalisation works as expected.

But try it with smart quotes on. That fails every time.

Windows 2000 running with a UK English locale, and the autocorrect
character for apostrophe set to 0x2019, which is the default.

Note that there are other issues concerning capitalisation and "special characters".
Beside this one, a quick query reveals these:
Issue 17449 (Auto capitalization broken if field comes first in new sentence)
Issue 28332 (Automatic First Word capitalization fails after quote.)
Issue 59720 (Autocapitalization fails after numbers and symbols)

Wow! six years after I reported this bug and someone noticed it.

I think the general form is that if the word on either side of the sentence
break contains a symbol such a smart quote, autocapitalisation will fail. eg, I
know it doesn't work if the preceding word ends with a smart double quote.

I have not tried it it words with non-ascii characters.
