Description raindrops 2006-01-16 12:03:02 UTC
Often a table follows some introductory title or a short text (such as "Notes:").
The user may not always want to use captions for such purposes.
At such times, the user may like to keep the title together with the table; so
they are not separated due to page breaks.

The usual way to do this is to select "Keep with the next paragraph" for the
title. But if a table follows it, this option does not work.

Desired: Even tables should be treated as paragraph for the purposes of "Keep
with the next paragraph" option.

Can you please attach a sample document? When I try this with a newly generated
sample, it works as desired.

MRU->FME: FYI, it is not so easy to reproduce as though at first...
Comment 2 raindrops 2006-01-17 08:43:58 UTC
I found wider problems while creating a sample. Raising another issue. (See
Issue 60686)
Comment 3 michael.ruess 2006-01-17 12:28:06 UTC
Means, I could close this here?
Comment 4 raindrops 2006-01-19 09:01:00 UTC
Yes, thank you.

Sorry for the delay in responding- Simply didn't notice this in my query page!
*******
[OT] I have set my defaut query to show all issues I raised/commented on. But it
does not show "new since last visit" status (like the "new messages" webpage at
a forum).

That will help us avoid situation like it happened here..

Can it be done?

Thanks in advance!

Closed.

You should file an enhancement for this in (I think so) "website" component.
Comment 6 raindrops 2006-08-23 17:03:35 UTC
I could create a sample with the problem. Attached.

Currently Writer is not designed to evaluate the "keep with next paragraph"
attribute across table cells. See issue 41394.

Sorry MRU, I don't agree: That bug is for a TABLE. It says that OOo does not
allow a table to break across a page-break. This one is about "Keep with the
next paragraph" property of the TEXT inside a table.

The other bug talks about

See the description:

"pen the attached file in OOo and just add a few CR before the table so that the
last row reaches the end of the page. When it does, then hit a few more CR and
the last rows of the table will move to the next page whereas the first ones
will stay on page one. In MSWord, if you do the same, as soon as the last row of
the table reaches the end of a page, the whole table jumps to the next page,
which is the desired behavior."

Clearly, the reporter inserts a few CR BEFORE the table (in other words, OUTSIDE
the table), and wants the table to keep intact. There is no mention of text
inside that table, or inside a cell that spans over two pages.

If it were indeed describing the same issue, then both its summary and
descriptiuon are totally wrong!

Comment 11 michael.ruess 2006-08-24 15:59:19 UTC
In issue 41394 the problem is not that a table disallows to page break. It is
about a table breaking in a WRONg page due to the fact that the paragraphs
"keep" attribute is not evaluated in table across cell borders.
What you have here is the same target, though entering CR's inside the table.
Here, you want a heading in a cell stick to text in rows following it. So it is
the same... vWhat do you think? Or did I misunderstood something?
Comment 12 raindrops 2006-08-24 17:36:22 UTC
That bug has a sample file which contains a plain blank table. The reporter
expects us to push the whole table down (with several CRs) till its bottom
reaches the page break.

In reporter's own words,
"In MSWord, if you do the same, as soon as the last row of the table reaches the
end of a page, the whole table jumps to the next page, which is the desired
behavior."

There you have it-- That bug is NOT about break at WRONG place: The reporter
simply expects that the table should not break at all; it should jump to the
next page.

Incidentally that is exactly what I see in OOo Writer m180 also. And no wonder:
The table has "allow table to brek across pages" and "allow rows to.." selected!

Someone should have closed that bug as "Invalid" long ago!

But I am digressing. Point is, that bug is completely about a different issue.
Comment 13 raindrops 2006-08-24 17:39:45 UTC
oops- What am i thinking?? That bug's correct (although on a different topic).
Since the breaking of tables (and even rows) is selected, it SHOULD break across
a page. It doesn't. So that IS a bug; not invalid.

But again I am digressing.... Point is, our bug is different.
(Must have coffee NOW.)
Comment 14 michael.ruess 2006-08-25 08:17:48 UTC
I am confused a little bit.
Hopefully I got you now correctly...
You speak of the text inside ONE table CELL? That didn't come clear by the
descriptions above and on top.

Currently the "keep with next paragraph" option does not work inside table cells
(the evaluation does not consider the attribute inside table cells). For
compatibility reasons (doc files would look differently) this has not been
implemented.
But it could be a good reason to make this configurable. Best would be to have
an option in the compatibility tab page which could be named like "consider
'keep' attribute inside table cells".
Comment 15 raindrops 2006-08-25 08:58:33 UTC
Yes; that's it. Thanks!

Comment 16 canis 2007-07-17 09:01:45 UTC
Issue 45979 seems to be a duplicate of this.

Option "Do not split from the next" doesn't work in tables only when table goes
to ODT. If you open DOC file with table in Writer, this option works correctly.
(OOo 2.2.1)
Comment 17 canis 2007-07-17 10:01:15 UTC
And it's not ENHANCEMENT i think.
It's bug!!!
Comment 18 michael.ruess 2007-07-17 13:38:54 UTC
Not a duplicate... "Do not split paragraph" (this issue here) and "Keep with
next paragraph" (issue 45979) are two different things though "keep with next"
is also mentioned there.

Different behavior in two products is not equal to a bug.
Comment 19 canis 2007-07-18 13:28:39 UTC
Sorry, I didn't understand with my english. They are not duplicates.

And I was not completely wright with describing situation. In attach are two
files with the same tables: doc & odt. If you open DOC in Writer "keep with
next" works correctly, save DOC to ODT and reopen it with Writer - it works! But
if you create table in Writer (second file, .odt) "keep with next" doesn't work.

Because of this I very often need to create two different tables (or more),
instead of set "keep with next" to the last table row on the page (for example,
if the last row on the page is united cell with heading).

Comment 22 canis 2007-12-01 18:47:12 UTC
Please assign a target milestone for this issue.
It is a very important and useful fiture I think.
MSO works with it good.

P.S. I'm still sure, that it's a bug: "keep with next paragraph" option in
Writer works with tables, created with MSO and doesn't work with native Writer
tables (see my previous comment and attached files).

Thank You.
