Apache OpenOffice (AOO) Bugzilla – Issue 73525
Envelope top margin defauts to 2.19"
Last modified: 2017-05-20 11:29:31 UTC
The bug is described in this thread http://www.oooforum.org/forum/viewtopic.phtml?p=199928&highlight=enevlope+printing#199928. User Drano also posted excellent images of the problem in the the thread. I was able to duplicate the bug using the following steps: If I select a #10 Envelope and select the "Print in the middle icon" I see the same result that Drano reports. Definitely a bug in writer. If I select the "Print at the right icon" everything works as expected. This problem also occurs if you select "Print at the left icon"(third from the right) Selecting either the "Print in the middle or Print at left icons (second and third from the right respectively) I see the issue. I'm using OOo V2.1 on XPSP2. I have an HP Laserjet 4L and an HP Deskjet 710C.
Reassigned to HI.
Have same problem with Samsung ML2010 laser printer.
I checked with "2.2.0RC4 German version WIN XP: [680m14(Build9134)]" and was not able to reproduce the problem for my OfficeJet 6110. @thomasjk: Please contribute a step by step instruction containing every key press and every mouse click, beginning with "open new WRITER document".
Are you saying you don't get 2.19" additional extension on the envelope when you pick center feed print on top on insert envelope third tab. This doesn't happen if you use the right feed choice. In fact it prints right on a center feed printer using the right feed (right most choice). The second from right choice(center feed) adds the extra 2.19 inches to the template. This also happens with release 2.2.0 writer. The link in the first post shows all steps taken. http://www.oooforum.org/forum/viewtopic.phtml?p=199928&highlight=enevlope+printing#199928

Created attachment 44321 [details] Detailed issue description with figures.
I have resubmitted the attachment which is an OpenOffice writer document that describes the issue. I didn't select the correct attachment type the first time.
Currently I can confirm the reported behaviour with "2.2.0RC4 German version WIN XP: [680m14(Build9134)]", I still have to think about the details before I can confirm this issue. My first impress is that the top margin is no bug: Referring to your imaeg 2 in "73525.odt", you see that the top margin _must_ become bigger than 0 if you move the envelope away from the right paper tray boarder. An other question is the change from paper format "Envelope 10" to "user", the new seize seems to be "Envelope 10" + top margin. Somehow related to Issue 66434? @thomasjk @hardycc50 What exactly are the real problems you have with the reported behaviour?
I suggest you read in detail this link http://www.oooforum.org/forum/viewtopic.phtml?p=199928&highlight=enevlope+printing#199928 which I included in my attachment 73525.odt. If you have a printer that prints in the middle, the envelope does not print correctly unless you tell Writer it prints at the right. The user Drano is the one who made the original posts concerning the problem. I reported it as a bug.
@thomasjk It's no need to repeat the same link again and again - that's boring and does not contribute any new information. Its not new that you will get wrong results if you use wrong printer or printing settings; within the last 15 years I had to modify my habits again and again when I used new software, a new printer or changed anything else, because the new system worked somehow different to my old one. So we need comprehensible arguments why the current behaviour might be wrong. My printer has no "Middle paper tray", so that everything works find for me. Are there any recommendation in your printer manual suggesting to use the printer setting "Print in the middle"? And does that work with other software, but OOo's behaviour is different to that of other software?
I reviewed issue 66434 and issue is the same as 66434.
Can <http://documentation.openoffice.org/HOW_TO/word_processing/Howto-printing-envelopes-diagnostics.html> be helpful for our discussion?
My printer Samsung ML2010 center feeds all documents. The right and left guides move toward the center of tray to guide documents smaller than max width of 8.5". I can print the #10 envelope selecting the right feed icon OK while center feeding the document. The only problem with the center feed icon is that it adds an extra 2.19" to the top of the envelope. MS Works doesn't have any feed icons in it. It just gives a #10 envelope with two boxes in it(return address and send). The printer driver somehow knows it is an #10 envelope, and prints it, small end of envelope feed first thru center of tray. Using XP pro OS, is the position feed needed by anybody?
Hardycc50: From your post on 4/11: "The only problem with the center feed icon is that it adds an extra 2.19" to the top of the envelope." Are you saying that the envelope was printed correctly or not? Were the sender and addressee fields printed in the correct location using the center feed icon? Rainerbielefeld: I tried this issue with Word 2000 on my desktop and the page is formatted properly when the Center feed icon is selected. I see a #10 envelope on the screen unlike OOo where I see an 8.5" X 11" page with a top margin of 2.19" that has a page style of envelope with format:"User". Selecting the Right feed icon in OOo I always see an #10 envelope on the screen in both Word and OOo with the page style of #10 envelope. My expectation is that I would see a #10 envelope with either the Center feed or Right feed icon selected.
Using the center feed icon, everything is 2.19" off.(Address field prints off to the right(bottom) of envelope and return address prints over 2 inches below where it should be.) Using the right feed icon and feeding thru the center everything prints OK.
Happens with OS X 10.5, Writer 3.01 300M15, XEROX 6180 Laser.
I agree with Comment #15. I'm using Writer 3.3 with an HP LaserJet 1320. The center feed icon in the envelope printing dialog ("Printer" tab) results in the printing being misplaced. Clicking the rightmost icon and feeding the envelope in the center puts the printing in the correct position on the envelope. Also, the positioning preview box does not work. I would also suggest that the "Shift right" and "Shift down" functions be expanded to allow negative numbers. This would make it possible to enter figures to provide a workaround. Thank you.
