Apache OpenOffice (AOO) Bugzilla – Issue 85342
problem with text wrap in Calc cell
Last modified: 2017-05-20 10:33:45 UTC
When text wrap and "Use printer metrics for text formatting" are turned on in Calc in OpenOffice 2.3.1, cells containing text with a certain line length relative to column width will show that the text exceeds the cell boundary. All of the text will not be wrapped and the small red triangle will be shown at the right cell boundary. Page preview will show correctly, however, that all the text will be printed. This problem does not occur with OpenOffice 1.1.4. In this earlier version, the same cell content will be shown in the editing view and in the page preview. In the newer version, the text wraps at the same points as in the old version for the page preview and when it is printed, but it wraps differently and incorrectly in the editing view. This is only for some and not all cells. It seems to have a problem if a word on a line comes close to the right boundary. In the editing view in this case it breaks the line before a word that would end near but not over the right cell boundary, but in the page preview and on the printed page the break comes (correctly) after this word. For anyone to replicate this problem, simply enter one line of text in a cell, then modify the column width by dragging until it makes the rightmost word on the line disappear. The way that I encounter this problem, which cannot be given as a specific example since it depends on my printer metrics, is to have, as I do, spreadsheets with many cells containing text. A certain number of these will just happen to have a line of text of the length that causes this problem to occur.

Sorry, it's wrong. It's not a duplicate of issue26125. I'll reopen it again
Confirmed in OOo3.0_RC1 on WinXP Follow your description, I check "wrap text automatically" and "Use printer metrics for text formatting". Found it is different between the page preview and the format displaying on the screen. Li Meiying
I'm not sure about the "Use Printer metrics" as I couldn't find this setting anywhere in the cell formatting dialogue. I did find that many cells in my document would not auto-resize to fit all text wrapped text. Then I right clicked on the cell in question and selected default formatting only to find that all the content fit in the cell without a wrap. It seems that the content is wrapping before it needs to and the cell is correctly sizing itself. The result of which is that in edit mode, while the cell size is correct the content is wrapping incorrectly and can't all be viewed and has a red arrow in the cell.
In a second case when text formatting (e.g. bold) actuall does require the text to wrap then the cell does not correctly recognize this and continues to size itself based on the default text format.
It seems there are several issues with different description about the same technical reason

This issue is different from the others, because it's about the case when "Use printer metrics" is on.
I found some cases where even with "Use printer metrics", text wrap is different between normal view and preview/printing. This is fixed in CWS "calc53". You can check if your example is affected: Press F2 to enter edit mode for the cell. If in edit mode, the text wrap is the same as in print preview, then it's probably the case that is fixed now.

Seen ok in CWS calc53 -> verified
I do not find any problem with normal text wrap, but if the text is made into hypertext link then it will not wrap. Also I do not see a reason why such links are force-displayed as dark gray "text background".
@ jvossoug please fill a separate issue for that behavour nobody will work on this issue further
