Apache OpenOffice (AOO) Bugzilla – Issue 1780
NNTP Service for openoffice.org's mailing lists missing
Last modified: 2003-12-06 14:52:32 UTC
To have an issue for communicating status and problems regarding the NNTP service for openoffice.org's mailing lists.
My understanding of the status is: - news server installed with the name news.ooo - test groups created (ooo.test.announce, ooo.test.users,ooo.test.cvs) Despite the fact that I got no "official" message to start testing I would like to provide the following feedback for ooo.test.users: mail -> news: Messages sent via mail to list appear on the news server. news -> mail Messages sent via news to group DON'T appear on the mail list. This seems to be caused by the wrong status of the group. The group (not mailing list) has to be moderated with appropriate settings in the moderators file. What's the moderators mail address?
Hello, are there any updates on this, is anybody alive at collab ?
Hi - the zombies rise again. Sorry for the delay. We have an internal issue #3555 that I've put to the highest priority to get answered for you. I'll update this issue as soon as I get you the information you require.
Hi, I am sorry it has taken so long to get back to you on this. The moderator's mail address for ooo.test.users would be: gateway=nntp2mail-ooo-test-users@openoffice.org Thank you Kat
I played now with the users list: I generated postings from news.openoffice.org, our internal-news server and the mailing list -> all messages appears on the mailing list and our internal news server, but not on the NNTP Server news.openoffice.org.
Hi, It is suspected that the problem is that diablo is refusing articles/messages because the groups are moderated and it's not finding an Approved: line in the header. We are continuing to research this. Thank you Kat
behaviour for the users lists looks fine now. can I become a moderator for the ooo.test.announce list to test this list ?
Hi Martin, Most of the details have been worked out and I will put in the request to have you added to the moderators list. Thank you Kat
Hm, if I now post to test.announce I get exactly this message I have posted before, but there is no chance to moderate ?
Ok, now more precise the behavior for the annouce list. 1. if i post via news.openoffice.org (nntp) to the announce list I get the chance to moderate this and all looks fine. 2. if I post this with our interal news server, I get the original message via: to: openoffice-moderators@staroffice-news.germany.sun.com. This might be our internal configuration problem, Stefan ? 3. If I post to the mailing list test-announce@openoffice.org I get the origianl message via the the mailing list without moderation, but it is not visiable on news.openoffice.org.
Martin, Max, please don't mix up openoffice.test.* with ooo.test.* on our Sun internal server. openoffice.* works using our own gatewaying mechanism and is not subject of testing news.openoffice.org. ooo.* is the hierarchy to be tested. 2. if I post this with our interal news server, I get the original message via: to: openoffice-moderators@staroffice-news.germany.sun.com. This might be our internal configuration problem, Stefan? ST: It is (or better was) our problem. 3. If I post to the mailing list test-announce@openoffice.org I get the origianl message via the the mailing list without moderation, but it is not visiable on news.openoffice.org. ST: I can't reproduce Martin's problem. Sending to the list test-announce@openoffice.org works for me. I will check with Martin.
Tests results so far: List types moderated (ooo.test.announce) and unmoderated (ooo.test.users) work. Open issues: a) ooo.test.cvs doesn't work. Please subscribe the appropriate gateway mail address to the list cvs@test.openoffice.org or name the address which I can subscribe. b) List type allowed-posters should be tested. Please create the group ooo.test.features and subscribe the appropriate gateway mail address to the list features@test.openoffice.org or name the address which I can subscribe.
Hi, Our operations department is taking a look at the issues raised in points in Stefan's last posting. Thank you Kat
In parallel to a) and b) mentioned before or after that I would like to see c) newsfeed between news.openoffice.org and ns.stardiv.de (62.156.160.99) being setup.
Our operations department reports adding ooo.test.features and ask for this to be tested. Thank you Kat
assigning to myself
I would like to see added groups being tested. Mail forwarding ooo.test.features couldn't work because the gateway email address wasn't subscribed to the list. I subscribed the newsgroup gateway address now to lists cvs@test and features@test and it works now. In the future I would like to see 1 posting in the group to show that the group works, before I start testing. Any new about the feed?
Our operations department reports that the newsfeed is now setup properly on our end and is currently queueing articles to your news server. In order for this to work you need to be connecting to and accepting connections from nntp.sfo.collab.net. The feed server is listening on port 435.
> In order for this to work you need to be connecting to and accepting > connections from nntp.sfo.collab.net. ns.stardiv.de accepts articles from nntp.sfo.collab.net and articles are coming in. Thanks. > The feed server is listening on port 435. Connection establishment to nntp.sfo.collab.net:435 doesn't work,. As far as I can see that's no problem as articles are submitted via the NNTP-moderators mechanism and not via the feed from ns.stardiv.de to nntp.sfo... We still have an issue (which is solved for netbeans) with mail messages addressed to 2 list. A newsserver doesn't accept the second messges and rejects as duplicate. They only appear on one list. See my message "mail to 2 lists" sent to cvs@test and users@test. The solution for netbeans was to modify the message id in the mail2news gateway by adding the newsgroup <ooo.test.users/123123123@somehost>.
Hi, Ops has made some modifications and report that posts to multiple newsgroups/mailinglists now work.
That works fine. Thanks That's it for testing.
Next step would be to create newsgroups for (almost) all OOo mailing lists. Could please evaluate whether adding the gateway-emailaddress can be added in an automated fashion. Or do we have to subscribe the address to ~100 lists manually.
Our operations department feels this can be automated and would like a complete list of newsgroups to be added.

I take this as the collector of all NNTP related issues (e.g. 2071, ...)
Reassigning all of kat's open issues to support so that I can go through them.
Okay, we'll leave this as an umbrella issue. The current open issues are issue 2071 and issue 2812.
Most of the issues relating to this issue were closed. We are still working on getting historical posts onto the nntp server (issue 2522), and louis is working on a moderation concept for nntp (issue 2071). I'm closing this issues, as the others stand on their own fine.
Hi there are no new mails on the newsserver since the last weekend. Jörg
The group ooo.lang.users_de is missing. The corresponding mailinglist has been created just recently, so obviously the process for new mailinglists doesn't include an information for the nntp gateway management yet. Dietrich
Hi Dietrich, this issue (#1780) is in state RESOLVED/FIXED. Please don't reuse existing issue for new ones. I would recommend to submit a new issue.
As agreed by Louis I will close these resolved fixed support-owned issues now. If you have trouble with that, please re-open the issue.
